Dear Olena,

I recently read your article on Indigo Children in the latest Eagleye Magazine. I believe my child may be Indigo and has been diagnosed as ADHD. I was wondering if alternate remedies such homeopathy or Bach Flower may help. Regards, Anna C.

It's so wonderful that you have been blessed with an Indigo child in your life. Even though it is our view that all children are "special" and come in with purpose, Indigos certainly can pose a challenge, especially in the behavioural department. Doreen Virtue, who wrote "Care and Feeding of Indigo Children", says that in her opinion, ADHD stands for Attention Dialed into a Higher Dimension. We certainly can agree with that statement. Indigo children are defnitely attuned into multi-dimensions, much like attuning to multi-radio stations. Imagine turning on your radio and receiving many many stations all at once. Within a short time, a matter of seconds mostly likely, this could drive a person "bonkers" for the lack of a better word. Another way of understanding this is through what I call the 'hour-glass' analogy. Picture an hourglass - many streams of information are coming into the top or the wide part the hourglass, and then trying to be squeezed or funneled through the channel or narrow portion. That is what happens to the Indigo brain and body. Large amounts of energy trying to be squeezed into a much 'narrower' channel so to speak creates an overload-type situation. For Indigos, this is a normal and daily occurance, and figuring out how to handle this can be challenging for the both parent, caregiver, and the child.

The basis of Bach Flower Remedies works on the premise that a person's ills were directly related to their negative states of mind. And by replacing the negative state of mind with its opposite, balance and harmony. Flower remedies directly correspond to a specific mood, statement of mind, as well personality traits. They have a direct effect on the personality, specifically on the emotional and mental levels. Homeopathy works in a similar way on the premise that "like cures like".

Because of the intense brain hyperactivity in Indigo Children, 'calm' is the operative word here. At best, administering Flower remedies such as the all-purpose Rescue Remedy for example, can have a stabilizing and calming effect, especially in stress-induced situations or severe upset and traumatic situations. It can also be helpful in situations like visiting the dentist, or stage-fright. The same applies to homeopathic preparations such as Chamomilla for example. Any remedy to be used however should be assessed on an individual basis.

For Indigos however, it is important to recognize that unlike illness or ailments, this is not a condition that is temporary or that will disappear. This is natural state of their being. I am a strong advocate of a clean and healthy diet. For example, sugar, processed, refined foods, additives, preservatives, artificial colours, and caffeine all have a strong, and very often, negative effect on all levels of being, especially for these children. This is something I strongly believe needs to be monitored carefully at all times, especially in the early formative years of growing up.
