THE COACHES CORNER - "ASK THE COACH"

Dear Coach, lately I have been struggling with the concept of success. I am an artist and want to be successful through my art and teaching it as well. I just don't know how to go about achieving that success. Help! / Maxine.

Dear Maxine, I recently attended a personal development seminar where I heard the quote, "Eighty percent of success is just showing up." What that means is just by being a participant in the game called life, shows the Universe that you are ready to move forward in whatever undertaking you are involved in. "Showing up" is the action step that comes after an idea or concept that has been created mentally. I liken this to a bowling ball analogy. You can't hit the pins unless you let go of the ball. So the success of that is entirely dependant on you letting go of that ball. It is the same with being a participant in the game of life. Success is entirely dependant on you. In other words, it is not something external that moves towards you. You in fact, move towards it. How? Simply by showing up and being fully present in the process.

This brings me to the second part. Success is also how you define it. Ask yourself how do you envision success? Is it being extraordinarily wealthy? Is it being able to earn a living full-time from your art? Is it having notoriety and fame as a well-known artist? Is it about being happy and contented inside of yourself? Or perhaps a combination of them all? Whatever it may be, and in order to achieve something you need to be very clear and specific about what it is that you personally want. If you define success as earning let's say, $10,000 per month stemming entirely from your artwork, then suddenly that specific becomes a measurable goal to work towards. It also allows you to develop a plan that can be broken down in to smaller steps, in order to achieve a larger goal.

So first, by "showing up" you've already set a course of action in motion - you've let go of the ball in order to allow it to move down the alley towards its destination. And second, becoming very clear on what you want to create and achieve are integral steps in the plan. It may be weeks, months or even years before you reach your destination or your desired results, but "showing up" can only take place in the now. Not tomorrow, not yesterday, only now.

You are the key to your success! So how will you "show up" today?

SO WHAT DO YOU REALLY WANT FROM THE LIFE THAT YOU HAVE?

Last issue, we looked at the aspect of charting one's own course in life, where each person is the both the architect and builder. But what about the steps leading up to charting a course? One of the most common questions that I get as a coach, is "how do figure out what I really want from the life that I have?" Well, this question is often linked to an even deeper question - what is my purpose and/or passions in life and how can I find it? We also tend to tie that question often with the flow of money. I once read a book called "Do What you Love and the Money will Follow". Well, after many years of pondering that statement, I discovered that there was one vital problem - I loved to do many many things, but not everything that I loved created an income flow for me in order to be content and fulfilled, since I very much connected the two concepts. What I discovered further was this: that there is a difference between the things that you are passionate about and one's purpose or purposes in life of which I believe is where things like money flow from when you tap into it. For example, I can be passionate about being a superstar basketball player, but if I'm only 5 feet tall and no athletic inclinations, then it is certainly not my purpose. And even though I could still choose to devote 100% of my energy because of my passion around it, it still wouldn't net me a spot with the Harlem Globetrotters. It would also leave me broke and hungry, since my all my energy would be going out towards this passion, but netting me nothing in return.

There are several areas one can look at in order to figure out and uncover what you really want:

1. Look at your gifts - your raw talent. These are the abilities you were born with that you have no control over, you're just simply good at them. For example, your physical abilities, your charisma, your looks, ability to play a musical instrument. Think back to your childhood - what were you naturally good at - what came easily to you without any thought whatsoever? What did you enjoy? What did you love to do?

2. Look at your strengths. This is your developed talent - natural abilities that you have taken in your life and refined further.

3. Take stock of your interests. These are areas usually associated with positive experiences from your past that you have chosen to develop and master.

4. Evaluate your passions. These too are developed, however very often associated with challenges, hurdles or negative experiences from your past. For example, maybe you had a bad familial experience and it is what helped mold you into the person you are today. It may also be a cause you wish to take up, because of a challenge you had to face, and in turn channel that energy into something positive that may help others facing that same challenge

5. Ascertain your value. If you take what your natural gifts and strengths allow you to experience, you can create and contribute in a way that allows you to add value to those around you. Discovering the purpose is not often the passions that we have, however finding what we want usually involves bringing passion and purpose together. Through that you discover the value that lies inside. Your VALUE is the responsibility that you have to contribute to others and society. Finding what your purpose is centers around your gifts first and foremost. And a clue about your purpose is also very often what we try and run away from. As the saying goes, "what we resist, persists". The closer you are with using your gifts, the closer you are to finding what you desire, and therefore, your purpose, personal fulfillment and everything else that stems from that.

Coaching is certainly a tremendous tool to help one uncover their purpose and value to others. And working through life to get to the point where Purpose and Passion are connected is one of the fundamental aims of coaching.
